How do I program a garage door remote to open my 25 year old garage door?
I have an old garage door (no learn buttons) and an old garage door remote. I want to buy a new remote but don’t know how to program it without the learn buttons, etc. The current remote I have is of the old up/down switch variety and only has 8 switches. Can I buy a new opener and be sure that it will read the same 8 switch code? Can anyone offer advice or suggest where I can find a remote that learns automatically like the buttons in a car?
Thanks!

I have also tried to to do this. I have a Stanley garage door opener that is over 30 years old. It still is working fine. I checked around before and I couldn’t find anything that would work. the old grudge door openers only have like a six digit code. The only thing you possibly could do is find somebody selling a old unit like yours.
i would get a universal remote so it can search for the correct code and frequency to open the door,it will come with instructions on how to program it
Unfortunately, the technology has changed a lot in the last 25 years when it comes to GDO remotes and security. One option is to purchase a universal receiver and new remote. The universal receiver plugs into an outlet in your garage and is then wired directly to the power head just like the button on the wall. The remote(s) then send the signal to the new universal receiver instead of the one built into the GDO. You can most likely find them at stores that sell GDOs. I looked it up on Sears’ website and they have both the unit by itself or one with a remote. (53757 or 53751). They will not work with your old remote however, and may not work with one built into your car. Additionally, they say that they are not for machines dating prior to 1993 but that is most likely because of changes in safety regulations.
Good Luck
Email me more info and I will point you to a source. It sounds like a Linear.(310mhz) If it is just match the switches to the original.
